Herb: Lavender

Lavandula angustifolia.

Quite a lovely name for such a lovely plant.

Lavender's aroma is known to help in relaxing the mind and spirit.

But there's more than just its well intentioned aroma.

It's an herbal medicine.

What do we use it for?

Mosquito bites.

We get a bite.
We apply lavender oil.
The bite stops itching.
Doesn't grow much (or at all).

We re-apply as needed. (If it starts itching again - re-apply.)

Last summer a mom told me of her daughter's terrible reaction to mosquito bites. Her daughter had a bite at that time. We were in church and because my son had just gotten two mosquito bites before going to church - I just happened to have the oil with me.

The mom, busy running the primary program for the day, asked me to get her daughter out of her primary class and apply the oil to her leg. So I did. The young daughter and I laughed about this little mid-church adventure. The bite was huge - a red, swollen and hard area covered almost half of her thigh. I applied it one more time before church was out.

It must have helped because this summer they've purchased and are using their own lavender.

Note: It's best to beat the bite before it gets too inflamed.

Going through a summer without lavender is out of the question for us.

I just wish everyone else knew about it!

  1. hey, my sister-in-law uses essential oils from a company called Butterfly Express. She said its much cheaper than other companies and the quality is really good.
